THE INFLUENCE OF LOCATION AND DEPTH OF CRACKS ON THE 
DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ROTORS DURING RUN-UP 
CONDITION

Abstract. 
The rotating machines are heavily utilized in different industrial sectors. Their dynamic behaviors are usually 
receiving a significant care during design stages especially with crack occurrence consideration. In this research, the effect of transverse 
crack in rotor systems on their dynamic behavior was investigated. The work involves developing a numerical model based on 
displacement –based finite element technique to identify the dynamic properties of a rotor in terms of vibration responses, natural 
frequencies and critical speed. Variable crack depths at different locations along the rotor were considered in constructing the model. 
A numerical example of rotor system was employed to assess the validity of the developed approach. The numerical results obtained 
show a distinguishable change in vibration responses, natural frequencies and critical speed of the cracked rotating machine. The 
amount and nature of this change were found to be function of crack volume and position. The results obtained propose a possible tool 
for an on-line diagnostic and monitoring facility.
