The History of computer development
The development of computers has a long and interesting history. Today, it hardly takes a minute to compute huge sums of data. All that a person has to do is type a few keys, on the keyboard and the results are « immediately» displayed on the screen. But, in ancient times counting was very difficult. In fact, the mathematicians and scientists had no idea of a powerful computer existing today.

In those times (around 5000 years back), small pebbles were used to count numbers (for e. g. A herd of sheep).But counting large numbers was a problem. This made use of the concept of beads and strings. The Abacus makes use of the idea of place value and counting in groups. A bead stands for one, ten hundred and so on depending on the row it is in. The rapidly advancing field of electronics led to construction of the first general purpose electronic computer in 1946 at the University of Pennsylvania.

Log Tables: In 1964, John Napier, a Scottish mathematician invented logarithm tables, which, is still used for complicated calculations in schools. He subsequently also invented Napier’s Rods (Bones) for complicated multiplications.
Slide Rule: In 1620, William Oughtred invented the slide rule, which is a calculating device, and uses principles of log tables.
