I had the pleasure of working with a Florida-based teacher named
Cathryn Lokey on a curriculum for teaching listening skills to children.
(The curriculum we developed is available as a download from my
website at juliantreasure.com.) She had created an excellent way of
sensitising young children to the facts that listening takes work, that you
can focus on it and that focus helps you do it better. This was a little
mantra the kids would repeat, which went:

“We listen with our ears, with our eyes, and with our
heart!”
Becoming conscious of what you are listening 
with
is an excellent practice
and this mantra provides a simple, memorable way to improve your
listening skills by doing exactly that.
It’s tempting to assume that we simply listen with our ears although, as
we discussed at the start of Chapter Three, the whole body is in fact
involved. Nevertheless, the ears are the primary channel for sound and
the first part of the mantra reminds us to 
focus our hearing on the
subject at hand
.
The second reminds us to 
look at the person we are listening to
.
This is also covered in my RASA practice (the last one in this list). If your
eyes are busy with other tasks, your listening is degraded because the
visual information is incongruent; it displaces attention you would
otherwise be giving to the speaker. Being seen to pay attention is just as
important as paying attention itself. We all know the feeling of frustration
and even despair when we are trying to communicate and the other
person is looking at a screen, their watch, or indeed anywhere but at us.
The dance of eye contact in dyadic conversation varies from culture to
culture and even more from person to person and situation to situation: if
we like someone, we look more than if we don’t, while the context of the
conversation is key – for example, it’s no surprise that confessionals
preclude eye contact because when we are admitting something with
shame or guilt, eye contact is the last thing we want. It is important to be
culturally sensitive: people from some Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern,
and Native American cultures may consider eye contact to be insulting.
On average, we look more at the other person when listening than when
speaking: in his book 
Bodily Communication
, eminent social
psychologist Michael Argyle estimated that, on average, listeners gaze at

the speaker 70 percent of the time, while speakers gaze at the listener
only 40 percent of the time, often in small bursts at the end of
statements, and mainly to check that the other person is listening.
