When did you last go to a birthday party? Write about it. Nearly a year ago. I went to a birthday party at an assisted living facility, which we used to call an old folks’ home. They did a monthly party for all the residents who had birthdays within that month, and my mother’s birthday was in that month. The celebrants each got to invite one person, so I went. It was well-intended but ridiculous. First, there was a long table against a wall, with assigned seats. The residents all used walkers or wheelchairs. Imagine unsteady fragile people wiggling down that narrow gap to get to their allotted chair. Comedy, if you’re into slapstick. Next, there was a mix-up with the food (which, when it arrived 55 minutes later, was perfectly delicious). It took so long that the elderly lady next to me decided that she must have already eaten, so she insisted on getting up and going back to her room. There was the smiling twinkly lady who couldn’t speak and had trouble both chewing and swallowing. That was more Grand Guignol than comedy. She normally ate in another part of the building, with other residents who required additional assistance, but they brought her to the general dining room as a treat and allowed to feed herself. Food went everywhere, some of it partially chewed. The area of effect was impressive for such a tiny, frail person. There’s more, but you get the idea. I’m glad I went, because told properly, it’s a hell of a story. These are just a few highlights. ;)
