Harwell & James is a small manufacturer company where most of young women work. Most of them are from countryside. The young women live in dormitories and work for 0.8$ per day. Factory is well lit, clean and safe. Most of them say that work of the factory is hard. However, they like working in this company. Some of the young women work only themselves in their family. They have children and their husbands are unemployment. Their income dependent on them. If they have not work in this factory, it will be hard to find another job and it can cause to do even begging or prostitution. Company does not hire under the age of 14 and it has no health or safety problems.
Hanna is an engineer whose company asked to increase efficiency of the factory. She should create or design manufacture of new equipment for the company. There is serious problem that after completion of the installation of the new equipment, many of the employees may be left without their jobs. So, What Hannah should do?
Hannah should think from all sides. There are different ethical way to solve this problem. If she think about it from professional ethics, she should do her job, design, and implement new equipment. Because, it can define his loyalty to the company. If this new equipment bring a significant profit to the company, she should work on it. Because, she is employee and she should do her job well and do her tasks. She should bring benefit to the company. On the other hand, if she think about it from personal morality, she should care about young women and their status after installation of new equipment. If it can cause to loss of job for young women and consequence of unemployment of them is so bad or harmful for society, she should not do it. Because, without this job unemployment women have to do begging even prostitution. From personal morality of ethics, it is so harmful for society and it well big wrong decision.
However, there is a rule in ethics that if engineer whose loyalty causes him to refuse their task, pass to another engineer will not protect public. If in this situation objection of Hannah will not protect the public anyway. She should this assignment. In most of the time, engineer is not expert in public society. Engineer should be loyal to the company and leave ethical considerations to public policy.
In the Engineering ethics, there is a cool rule named Golden rule. One of the principle of this rule is “treat others as you would like them to treat you”. Another one is “Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you”. Firstly, Hanna should analyze situation to determine alternative actions whether available or not. Secondly, she should analyze all consequences of completion of new equipment. All consequences should be expected and should be less harmful to both sides. Thirdly, Hanna should replace herself to young women of factory. She should determine whether it is harmful for them, or any other way to tackle this issue. If she lost her job of this factory, what she can do and what kind of situations will expect her. Then, whether she would be willing to accept those consequences or an action is morally unacceptable if she would not be willing to accept those consequences. Hannah’s decision should be ethical and the most right one and should think about all sides.
Conclusion here is obvious, Hanna’s action dependent on particular decision. If she install equipment, it will be useful for company but harmful for women. If she remain women, the efficiency of the company will not rise and it will be harmful for company.
