2. Assignment guidelines – Group Report Task
The following assignment is designed to be completed in teams, and will account for 25% of your final grade. You have to select a company and assess its management issues. The current task will give you an opportunity to examine how management works in practice, and synthesize your ideas learned from the lectures in the first 14 weeks of the IBA course. Your directive is to choose a company that is located within the borders (no matter of the size or type of the company) and find the two management elements or strategies that are ineffectively applied within that particular company. You will then have to provide recommendations on how to improve these issues or failures within the context of your chosen company.
You are required to evaluate what the management of the chosen company have done over the past 5 years (preferably no longer than 5 years) to decide whether their management actions were ethical, appropriate towards employees and customers, assess their corporate social responsibility actions, and investigate other management functions to identify negative actions or decisions taken by the company.
Based on your findings you are to make a series of recommendations to correct the management issues that you believe need to be addressed.
Each group member is expected to be actively involved in writing the project paper and all members will participate in a peer process to provide feedback on each member’s contribution to the group’s work. This should be indicated in the table provided in the Instructions sections (paragraph 2).
Some example of companies that you might choose, include: Artel, Akfa group brands, Makro, Korzinka.uz or any other branch of international companies located in Uzbekistan.
Concepts and key practices that can to be addressed in the assignment
The focus of the assignment is to develop an understanding of the main management practices that companies employ and being able to analyse them. Some of these concepts and key practices that could be addressed in your assignment include (but, not limited to) the following:
• Management environment and important managerial issues: understanding the management environment, the influence of environmental factors on managerial activities, developing organizational culture and its influence on management activities, evaluating and responding to ethical behaviour within the organizations.
• Making Decisions: understanding the decision making process, analysis of the decision making strategies applied in practice and the contemporary issues in decision making.
• Planning and Goal setting: understanding how the strategic management process is implemented within the organization, the potential limitations or strengths of the strategic management practices, describe how goals setting and planning is established and what are the potential drawbacks of sticking to these plans.
• Managing change and innovation: describe what organizational change the company has faced, explain how employees resisted and how these change was managed, describe how the company managed employee stress and stimulated innovation, how the innovation process structured.
• Managing entrepreneurial ventures: explain how the planning of the entrepreneurial venture was accomplished, describe what are strengths and weaknesses of controlling these ventures, evaluate to understand the methods that companies use when selecting and refining a particular business concept/project, how did market and technological improvements provide opportunities for the company.
• Organizational structure and design: describe the organizational structure of the company, define the issues with the current organizational structure in the company, propose improved organizational structure and explain how the company might benefit from this improved structure.
• Managing human resources and diversity: describe the key issues of the human resources management process established in a company, explain how the selection and retaining process is completed in your organization, explain the role of diversity and inclusion and whether the company have focused on improving it.
