GARWAY MEDICAL PRACTICE

GARWAY PATIENTS' PARTICIPATION GROUP

MINUTES OF THE MEETING 27 JANUARY 2016
PRESENT: Christopher Penfold, Deirdre Cordwell, Judy Loncraine, Joan Ward, Carol Walsh, Marian Kirsner, Diana Landymore, Genie Stuart-Ranchev, Rose Doyle, Hugh Smith, Lucy Arnold, Olivia Danso (Healthwatch), Stephen Duckworth ( Observer from North Kensington Medical Practice PPG) APOLOGIES: Susan Crane.

  1. INTRODUCTION: Deirdre welcomed everyone. The minutes of the meeting on 25 November 2015 were approved. In matters arising Diana said that the Primary Care Navigators were all now coming on board.

2. REPORT FROM THE PRACTICE: Hugh Smith reported:

  • Either Dr Phornnarit or Dr Dhar will take sessions at St Charles on Wednesday mornings as part of the integrated care initiative

  • Garway will get a full-time Healthcare Assistant

  • Nurse Elle is setting in well

  • Lucy Arnold has started doing 2 hours a week on the website

  • The stop-smoking adviser is having a positive impact

  • Testing for patients with breathing problems has restarted

  • Lucy has been trained to use the ambulatory blood pressure monitoring kit

  • Dr Hennessey will see the top 2% of patients on the fraility index in order to update their care plans in line with the government initiative

  1. OPEN AGE: Clare Hogan who manages the Open Age activities based in the Beethoven Centre spoke, and handed out leaflets, about the activities organised by the Charity for the over 50s at different venues in the area:

  • Membership is free to all and activities are either free or cost £1

  • Classes include exercise, language, art, trips out, men only groups

  • Referrals can come from GPs and people can be visited in their homes and provided with transport to the venue

  • There is a Steady and Stable falls prevention class

  • They organise activities for carers to give them time to themselves

  • Chris suggested that the practice could have Open Age leaflets available to coincide with relevant clinics

  1. HEALTHWATCH: Olivia Danso said that tomorrow’s meeting is on recruitment and is for the Queens Park and Paddington PPGs to come together. West London CCG staff will give updates on what affects GP practices. There is a need to make the PPGs more diverse. Olivia is able to access other communities and then she feeds back from them.

  1. NAPP Bulletins: Joan highlighted:

  • PPG awareness week is 6-11 June. Our plans could be discussed at the next meeting

  • The top tips to the get the most out of your GP appointment

  • A trial has shown that if a text reminder to patients of an outpatient appointment included the cost to the NHS of not attending, then the number of Did Not Attends was reduced. Hugh thought this was not something that would be practical for the practice.

  • Joan will book on the Patient Choice event

  • The annual conference is on 11 June in Stretton, Cheshire

  1. WEBSITE:

  • Chris said the website was certainly looking refreshed and Lucy would be able to work out the hits on each page

  • Lucy suggested a patient could write up their ‘Journey’ for the website. Hugh said perhaps Reddy could facilitate this.

  • Lucy suggested the PPG could interview a member of staff. Rose said she would like to interview Ann.

  • Diana proposed putting a message ‘Have you seen our website?’ on the TV screens

  • A photographer is coming in next week to do new staff photos

  • Deirdre and Chris will list the changes the PPG has helped make to the practice to go on the website.

  • Marion proposed putting a question on the PPG part of the website asking patients to let the Group know if there are any issues they would like us to consider and what they would like to see on the website.

  1. SEBRA: Chris has submitted a piece for the spring edition.

  1. HALLFIELD ARTWORK: the new pictures will be ready for the waiting room by the end of the month. The existing work will go into the rooms.

  1. OTHER BUSINESS:

  • Rose felt there was an increased difficulty and wait in availability of appointments. Hugh said that Dr Dhar had been on holiday but Dr Phornnarit sees all emergencies and as a result fewer Garway patients are going to A& E or calling 111. Also the time taken interviewing new patients puts a strain on the system.

  • Genie asked about the procedure for getting results of tests if your own doctor is away. Hugh explained that whichever doctor is on duty will read and record the results and then give an appropriate message to reception to be passed on when the patient phones in.

  • Genie raised the question of how patients can authorise carers to get their results on their behalf. Hugh suggested that information as to the issue of consent could be put on the website.

  • Stephen wondered if someone from Garway PPG could come to a face to face meeting to explain how we have set up our group.

  • Diana had been to two meetings. One was about how the CCG works and how to get the patient’s voice into it, the other was with the director of the Central CCG about the 5 year plan. She will bring the details in.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING: Wednesday 23 March 2015 at 6.30pm.
