Speeches can be different like entertaining speech, informative speech, demonstrative speech, political speech and etc. All speeches have their purpose but political speech should be more effective than others. Since behind the speech whole life of the government lies. From my experience, I watched political speeches of candidates for being president and some of their speeches are so impressive. Speakers have to persuade people themselves and convince audience that this speaker can lead the government appropriately and better than current one.
Among American presidents Barak Obama’s speeches gathered more listeners. His voice, pauses, gestures attract people to listen to him. Besides he seems to me sincere person (personal opinion). In this work I would like to write about Obama’s one of the most effective speeches which was spoken in DNC 2004 by Barak Obama. In this meeting he was only senator from Illinois.
He begins his speech with respect for former presidents- on behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, Land of Lincoln (already refers to Lincoln, a highly respected former president famous for the Gettysburg Address).
By continuing his speech, he mentions about his grandfather and father, I think it arise an interest in audience.
We gather to affirm the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy – the comment sets up a contrast and also creates a question-answer conundrum that keeps the audience interested to hear the revelation of the greatness of their nation.
Tonight,
If you feel the same energy that I do,
If you feel the same urgency that I do,
If you feel the same passion that I do,
If you feel the same hopefulness that I do
I we do what we must do
Lots of repetition here, delivered very quickly. Note that “feel” is strongly aspirated word and do is forceful and really pushes the conclusion. He pushes to the conclusion by adding to cadence and crescendo. His voice gets faster and more powerful adding to the feeling of rousing crescendo.
We know that eye contact is the most crucial part of any speech. Mr. Obama makes a constant eye contact with the audience in front of him and also with the ones who were watching him on air by making eye- contact with camera. This helps speaker to keep listeners attentively. Gestures and facial expressions are also used appropriately by Obama. He uses his hand most and tries to explain his emotion by using hands as a medium of communication.
To conclude, the aspects that given above are vital for all kind of speech. And Obama makes an effective speech in all meetings like in DNC.
