Samuels Library Initiates 1,000 Books before Kindergarten

Front Royal, Virginia. October 23, 2014

The Youth Services Department of Samuels Public Library in Front Royal, Virginia has announced that it will be facilitating 1,000 Books before Kindergarten, a reading readiness challenge for families of young children. Beginning November 1, parents may sign up their children to participate and begin logging the books they read to them. The library will use the same system that is used for its annual Summer Reading Club, which keeps track of each child’s progress online.
Studies have shown that reading to children at a young age promotes reading readiness as they enter Kindergarten to learn to read. Reading to children also helps to build vocabulary, stimulate language and cognitive skills, and build motivation, curiosity, and memory. “We want children to develop a lifelong love of reading, learning, and books,” said Michal Ashby, Youth Services Supervisor at Samuels Library. “When parents read to their children, not only does it help the children developmentally, but it strengthens the bond between the parent and child.”
Any child who has not yet entered Kindergarten is eligible to participate, and may begin at any time. Children will receive parties and prizes in their honor as they complete milestones in the challenge to hear 1,000 books.
