Fashion is a non-verbal way of communication that conveys a lot about the person’s personality, background and style. Earlier it was exclusively the world of the affluent, celebrities and royalty. However, fashion is now within the reach of the common man, especially the youth. Besides, dress fashion is an evolution of ideas, which begins as a fad, but in course of time gets accepted in society as a style, which could be in attire, behaviour or lifestyle. Fashion is mostly associated with glamour. It makes people feel confident and bold. People can express themselves openly. Fashion Industry As fashion evolved, the industry was formulated to manage the process for the consumers. The fashion world has given shape to a new industry, the ‘Fashion Industry. The fashion industry was created to design, manufacture and market clothes, footwear and accessories. Before creating the apparel industry, people made clothes for themselves. The mass production of clothing began in the mid-nineties when some creators began to make garments that did not require any fitting session with the tailors. The fashion industry in its true sense was established in the twentieth century when the neigh bourhood tailors decided to become the manufacturing business. At the beginning of the 20th century, new developments in Fashion took place. These developments certainly began in Paris first. Then they spread in other parts of the world. Consequently, new designs first came into existence in France. From Paris, they went to other parts of the world. Hence, Paris became the Fashion capital of the world. Also, Fashion in this era was ‘haute couture’. This Fashion design was exclusively for individuals.

A design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system or for the implementation of an activity or process, or the result of that plan or specification in the form of a prototype, product or process. The verb to design expresses the process of developing a design. In some cases, the direct construction of an object without an explicit prior plan (such as in craftwork, some engineering, coding, and graphic design) may also be considered to be a design activity. The design usually has to satisfy certain goals and constraints, may take into account aesthetic, functional, economic, or socio-political considerations, and is expected to interact with a certain environment. Major examples of designs include architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business processes, circuit diagrams, and sewing patterns.[1]
The person who produces a design is called a designer, which is a term generally used for people who work professionally in one of the various design areas—usually specifying which area is being dealt with (such as a fashion designer, product designer, web designer or interior designer), but also others such as architects and engineers. A designer's sequence of activities is called a design process, possibly using design methods. The process of creating a design can be brief (a quick sketch) or lengthy and complicated, involving considerable research, negotiation, reflection, modeling, interactive adjustment and re-design.
The key concepts of design
Art or science?
While not being exactly an art nor a science, it takes elements from both. Art is about creating something that expresses the author’s vision, ideas and feelings. While designers can express feelings and leave impressions through their work, doing so is not their prime objective. So it takes the creating aspect of art, as it is about crafting an item, a tool, an experience even.
Design is at the service of the people
On the other hand, it takes the problem-solving aspect of science. It exists primarily to address a particular need. To quote Steve Jobs: “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
The creative design process
Problems are best solved when approached in a comprehensive and systemic way. The goal of this process is to guide you and organize your work to turn ideas into concrete solutions. Designers do research and collect information about the problem they are considering: who is person facing this problem? Why? How are other people trying to solve it? From this research, they make a general hypothesis and identify the main features should be part of the answer. Then with these key aspects in mind it’s time to experiment different solutions and iterate. This last part is about learning from what works, what doesn’t to adapt your solution to fit the user’s need best.
Great design is invisible
It is achieved when the user doesn’t even notice its presence. This principle is particularly true in interaction design. Navigating a user interface should feel natural and unhindered. The user should be able to understand its rules and the meaning of its elements almost immediately. The user is guided by an invisible hand made of colors, shapes, contrast, repetitions.
Design is all around you

Changing definitions of design
The meanings of words change gradually with the times. The word “design” is no exception. It’s said that the word first came into widespread use at the start of the 20th century. Over roughly 100 years since then, the meaning of the word has changed gradually. Another characteristic of the word “design” is the fact that it has different meanings to different people.
For these reasons, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), an organization intended to promote design in general and the organizer of the Good Design Award, felt the need to issue guidelines concerning our thinking about design. Accordingly, a brief description of our thinking about design is provided below.
Our thinking about design
It’s said that the word “design” comes from the Latin word designare. Designare is said to have meant to draw a plan. For this reason, it is thought that the word design initially was used in this sense of a plan on paper. In fact, the characters used to write the word for design in Chinese have this meaning.
In light of this historical background, one might think that anything planned on paper could be called design, but this would seem to leave out the most important subject of what is the essence, or the central feature, of contemporary design.
Just what is central to design? After years of working with design, it appeared to us that the answer was “people.” While we may refer to them as “users” or by the lofty term “society,” people always are a central concern when a designer plans something new. The designer asks him or herself the questions “What do people need? What should I design for them?” We consider this to be the core that is of utmost importance to the contemporary definition of design.
We consider design to consist of the series of processes of thinking constantly about people most of all, identifying objectives, and planning ways to achieve them. We believe that what is realized as a result of this process is one design solution.
Design of products and services
One topic that is brought up often these days about design concerns the design of products and services. Since we think of design as we defined it above, the Good Design Award accepts entries for both products and services. But sometimes we are asked if mixing the two does not lead to confusion. We’d like to take this opportunity to spell out our guidelines on this subject.
Products and services often are discussed in binary opposition to each other. This is true not only in design but in other areas as well. This reflects the binary opposition between tangibles and intangibles. But we believe that when talking about design it might be better to think of products and services in a slightly different way. In the case of design, we think that the difference between products and services is a difference of focus. A product is a means of achieving a service, and a service is an objective. We believe that this is the difference between products and services. For example, the Sony Walkman was a big hit around the world at one time. Viewed as a product, the Walkman was a portable music player, but beyond that one could discern the objective of being able to listen to music while walking around. That was the service. Providing the portable music player made it possible to achieve this service. This is how products and services are related.
