  • Every year, several languages die out. Some people think that it is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Today, several languages are on verge of extinction. It is sometimes thought by some people that it is not vital, as fewer languages can make our life easier. Despite recognizing some drawbacks of this trend, I overall agree with this argument due to manifold reasons.

Admittedly, the loss of several languages can come in handy as this could ease people’s life. As a first point, should people interact with each other in just one language, they will not suffer from cultural obstacles as they can better communicate with strangers as their relatives. It also helps people acquire social skills, especially foreign ones. This can, in turn, lead to improved communication skills among different nations. Additionally, cultural clashes might disappear as a result of several languages dying out. That is to say, not only can people travel around the world without considering another culture, but they can also avoid learning a new language, which makes cultural clashes among different kinds of people lessen. In these cases, the disappearance of some languages can obviously be advantageous.

Nonetheless, this does not mean that decreasing number of languages is beneficial. To begin with, people might not always be satisfied, should their native language disappear, since they often find it troublesome to adjust to another culture; therefore, people might face dilemma to learn a new language, so this can result in loss of some nations’ traditions, cultures as well as their lifestyles, and even the extinction of this community. Furthermore, language evaporation can yield increases in globalization and westernization. It means that it can make most people speak just one language or even obey the same rules. As a result, it could definitely lead to a global crisis in some countries. Hence, language extinction can be rather detrimental.

In conclusion, I hold that the loss of different languages tends to be somehow very advantageous as it offers easy life as well as strong cultural bond, despite some consequences of this.
