MID-TERM ASSESSMENT ON IC ON FLT: “EVALUATING LANGUAGE MATERIAL”
“Teens’ English 6” is developed with the assisstance of the Republican Scientific Practical Center of Innovations under the Uzbekistan World Languages University. It is acknowledged that some ideas and materials have been taken from “Fly High 6” 2001 which was the result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan, The British Council. This classbook is full of interesting and fun activities and exercises which will help pupils learn and practise English. At the back of the book we can find a useful list of grammar points and vocabulary. The workbook contains extra exercises and activities to help pupils practise their English in the classroom or at home. With the help of the progress checks they can test the knowledge they got from the units. There is also a multimedia resource which learners can use with their teacher or at home to develop their listening skills. I have chosen Unit 8 of Teens' English 6 to analyze and evaluate.
Unit 8 named 'At the table'. Unit is divided into 6 lessons, 1 of them is project. In this unit during lessons pupils can learn about offering and asking for food, healthy and unhealthy food, eating habits and places. From the first lesson there are listening tasks, pair-works and pictures which describes the lesson's aim. Another lessons also have interesting activities like singing song, playing games on creating sentences and comparing pictures and statements. From this unit pupils can be aware of table manners, how to lay the table and being polite around the table. Grammatical topic of this unit is modal verbs, such as 'can' and 'must'. Every lesson has its vocabulary section which used and must be learnt during this lesson. 4 main aspects- speaking, reading, listening and writing- are also utilized according to the lesson's topic. Transcription of listening tracks are shown at the end of the book. After reading little texts pupils must answer the following questions, this increases reading and speaking skill in one time. In the last lesson- for project, whole unit is repeated in order to strengthen the understanding. I can see from the lessons, learning is mostly teacher- centered. The role of teacher is important during lessons for explaining. The homework is given in the form of an exercise at the end of the book.
Methodologically, the book is in line with school's approach and current around the world hypotheses and practices of language learning. Pronunciation: there is adequate work on acknowledgment and generation of individual sounds but there's few exercises for stress patterns and sound. There's a balance between individual work, pair-work, groupwork, and whole-class work within the book. The meaning of modern lexicon is displayed in setting. One objective of the book is empowering learners to utilize English outside of the classroom situation.
To sum up, this unit is full of curiously exercises and works out which offers assistance pupils learn and practise English. This classbook reminds that perfect way to memorize English is by utilizing it.
