“ Fish and chips” is a famous British dish. It was invented in the 1800s. Before then, fried fish was popular in England. Around the same time, thin cut fried potatoes, or “chips” were popular in Scotland. Shop owners served fish and chips with salt and vinegar. Londoners loved the new dish a lot because it was cheap and delicious. Later, during World War II, Britain didn’t have much food. However, there were still many fish and many potatoes. For that reason, many shops selling fish and chips were opened throughout the country. In this way, fish and chips became Britain’s favourite and famous dish. Today, every British town has a fish and chips shop. People call these shops “chippies”. The dish is still served with salt and vinegar. But now there are more side orders, such as tomato sauce, spicy sauce, peas, and onions. “ Fish and chips” has spread to other countries too. Now it is loved all over the world.
