The concept of modern automated design systems. 
The Design Process is an approach for breaking down a large project into 
manageable chunks. Architects, engineers, scientists, and other thinkers use the 
design process to solve a variety of problems. Use this process to define the steps 
needed to tackle each project, and remember to hold to all of your ideas and 
sketches throughout the process. 
The design process consists of 6 steps:
 

Define the Problem. You can't find a solution until you have a clear idea of what 
the problem is. 

Collect Information. Collect sketches, take photographs and gather data to start 
giving you inspiration. 

Brainstorm and Analyze Ideas. ...

The engineering design process is a common series of steps that engineers 
use in creating functional products and processes. The process is highly iterative - 
parts of the process often need to be repeated many times before another can be 
entered - though the part(s) that get iterated and the number of such cycles in any 
given project may vary. 
Design Automation usually refers to electronic design automation, or Design 
Automation which is a Product Configurator. Extending Computer-Aided Design 
(CAD), automated design and Computer-Automated Design (CAutoD) are more 
concerned with a broader range of applications, such as automotive engineering, 
civil engineering, composite material design, control engineering, dynamic system 
identification and optimization, financial systems, industrial equipment, 
mechatronic systems, steel construction, structural optimisation, and the invention 
of novel systems. 
The concept of CAutoD perhaps first appeared in 1963, in the IBM Journal 
of Research and Development,where a computer program was written.

While the History of CAD closely parallels the “History of the Computer,” 
there have been many innovations and iterations along the way.
