Effective ways to organize outside the classroom activities.

Teaching outdoors is nothing new.As a species ,humans have evolded to learn outdoors .for thousands of years,we have activily learned from experience alongside our elders .it is only recently in our evolutionary path that we have askedchildren to learn under florescent lighting ,within four walls.So ,talking your class outdoors is not in act of rebellion ,or even edgy pedagogy ,it is simply good practice .after decades of teaching outdoors ,I have experienced over and over again how learning outside transforms our students experience of school ,while reigniting my own love of teaching.There is a freedom to learn for both students and teachers that emerges in our school yard ;being outdoors allow kids some autonomy and agency to come alive with curiosity and to take responsibility for their wonders .For teachers there is something magical that happens when we allow ourselves to become co-learners with our students .In these uncertain days,teaching outdoors might be exactly what we need to move forward in a meaningful and thoughtful way.

This post is designed to help teachers who are new to the practical considerations of teaching outside the classroom .

Why do you want to try teching outside? Tere are multitude of reasons that make sense for me ,but you’ll need to do a bit of reflection on why this matters you. For some teachers the following list of reasons might resonate ,but they don’t all need to apply.Just get clear on one reason why this is important to you and place it front and centre in your planning .If your reason is not listed here send me a message ,I’m actually very interested in this process.

What is LOTC? Learning Outside Classroom is the classroom is a tool for teaching and learning which has been proven to raise attainment and achievement ,improve behavior and improve the engagement ao all gropus of pupils ,including those who are hard to engage inside the classroom environment.

The places where learning happens can have a significant effect on how a young person engages with a subject or an idea .Learning outside classroom can happen at almost any time and almost anywhere –outdoors or indoors :in the school grounds,on the high street ,in the local park , in museums and art galleries ,on mountain tops and rivers ,in Britan’s remote places ,or elsewhere in the world.Learning outside the classroom activities are often authentic ,hands-on,interactive and build on classroom learning.

The purpose of school is to prepare students for life beyond school.Today’s society has a higher demand for self-awareness and more specialized skills.one of the easiest ways to help advance students is by incorporating learning experiences outside the classroom .taking classroom learning outside can help enrich a students educational experience by showing them real -life applications of theories that they are learning at school.Learning outside the classroom experiences differ from those that arise through conventional teaching methods as students may be encouraged to engage a broader range of soft skills such as teamwork,leadership and compromise in their learning environment.

Conventional teaching focuses on repletion and memorization to educate students who learn best by listening.Howerever,conventional teaching doesn’t encourage students to develop critical thinking ,problem-solving and decision-making skills ,which learning outside the classroom can.

Not only can learning outside the classroom lead to a deeper understanding of challenging concepts ,but it can also provide a context for learning in many areas.Direct benefits of lerning outside the classroom:Learning outside the classroom can help teachers create enthusiasm for learning ,provide a real-world context and expose students to a range of STEM careers.

To sum up Evidence suggests learning outside the classroom can help raise achievement,improveclassroom behaviour and improvethe engagement of students including those who are hard to engage in the classroom environment.
