Introduction
Nowadays mobile devices and applications are a crucial part of the studying process. The important role of the mobile technologies in the classroom and e-learning as a platform for teaching and studying is difficult to overestimate. The application of these devices into everyday teaching seems a sensible way of motivating students and use their skills in learning English as a foreign language. On the other hand, online learning helps motivate students to do their homework. The hypothesis being that students will make progress quicker if mobile learning is used. The online platform used for this experiment was Rosetta Stone.
The aim of the article is to describe the experiment which took place at Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg, Russia, and to present its results paying special attention to the development of the listening skills. The participants of the three-month experiment were level A2 first-year students. All of them were divided into three groups: traditional teaching or control groups, blended groups where in the classroom students had traditional interactive lessons and they did their homework on the Rosetta Stone platform , and experimental groups, with Rosetta Stone online both in the classroom and at home. All the participants were from various University Departments and were taught by different teachers to ensure the validity of the results. The students were initially tested with Test, and having completed the course, they were tested again to see the progress or the lack of thereof. The students’ motivation was not taken into account since English is a must and all of them had to learn it. While taking part in the experiment, the participants had mock-Cambridge English: Key tests every month evaluating the development of such skills as Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. This article highlights the results of the online learning when developing the listening skills as well as the prospects and limitations of the mobile learning.
Mobile devices and applications are a vital part of our life. They are used for various purposes, including such an educational objective as foreign language acquisition. A great number of apps have been developed for those who are studying English as the second language providing an easy access to language learning without any constraints of time and place. In addition to this advantage, the apps promise to enhance basic language learners’ skills, including listening, reading, speaking, and writing, making an emphasis that the listening skills are better acquired through apps than other language skills. We expected the usage of mobile apps for studying the English language as a foreign one in the University could provide our students with additional learning resources, improve the students’ language skills such as pronunciation and vocabulary, motivate the students to do their homework with a more popular tool and anytime and anywhere they wished, because the learning materials were easily accessed due to the portability and individuality of mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, palmtops and laptops. We also aimed at making the process of studying the English language, including the independent one, more dynamic, and boosting the students’ interest in learning the foreign language. Online learning has become the most prominent teaching method utilized by Higher Education Institutions during the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. There are abundant online learning websites to practice reading skills, writing skills, vocabulary and grammar. However, there are very limited interactive websites for students to practice and develop their listening and speaking skills. Hence, this study, which was conducted in a private examines English Foundation students` perspectives on the use of two distinctive websites; ESL-lab.com and Youglish.com. in enhancing their listening, speaking and pronunciation skills.
