2.1.Historical background
The fight against Napoleon and the hope for change
Towards the end of the 18th century, the German Empire consisted of 
countless small states. The economy was hampered by countless borders 
and tariffs, the political system was characterized by absolutism, and the 
centuries-old estate system still applied in society. The ideas of the French 
Revolution also came to Germany with the French troops. In 1806 
Napoleon defeated the Prussian army in the double battle of Jena and 
Auerstedt. Under the impression of this defeat, Prussia, like other German 
states, realized that political reforms were necessary. The result was an 
attempt at a "revolution from above", a modernization of the state 
through reforms such as the abolition of the guilds. During this period of 
French occupation, the national feeling of the Germans strengthened and 
led to an uprising against foreign rule. In the Battle of the Nations near 
Leipzig in 1813, Prussian, Russian and Austrian troops finally triumphed 
over Napoleon's army. Now liberal forces demanded a reorganization of 
the state, democratic reforms and, above all, the national unity of 
Germany. This political current was also reflected in art: historical themes 
that glorified Germany's past were very popular; the poets increasingly 
resorted to popular forms such as fairy tales, legends and songs. 
However, at the Congress of Vienna, which determined the political 
reorganization of Europe in 1814/15, restorative forces dominated, which 
initially dashed all hopes for democratic changes.

According to ETA Hoffmann, the first version of the story The Sandman 
ended on November 16, 1815 at one o'clock in the morning. It was finally 
published at the end of 1816 in the first volume of the collection of stories 
known as Night Pieces. As in many of Hoffmann's works, the irrational is 
also in the foreground here. The Sandman corresponds in many ways to 
the literary tendencies of that time: the poets of the Romantic era were 
fascinated by the mysterious, the unconscious and the fairy tale. At the 
same time, however, Hoffmann caricatured the romantic ideal of the 
sensitive poet with the character of Nathanael. The appearance of a 
mechanical puppet in the story also corresponds to contemporary taste: 
attempts to build automata in human form had been made since the 
middle of the 18th century. Hoffmann were aware of these already in the 
story Die Automate (1814) he processed this motif. The figure of Professor 
Spalanzani has a real role model: In the 18th century, the Italian biologist 
Lazarro Spallanzani was one of the first scientists to deal with artificial 
insemination, i.e. in the broadest sense also with the creation of humans - 
similar to Spalanzani in the Sandman. ETA Hoffmann was also familiar 
with mental illnesses: his mother suffered from depression, and he 
himself increasingly struggled with hallucinations and delusions due to 
his excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, as a lawyer, he often had 
to deal with the question of a criminal's sanity. So it is not surprising that 
Hoffmann was interested in mental illness.
