2.2.Construction and Style
The story The Sandman begins with three letters. In a letter to Lothar, 
Nathanael describes his first encounter with the peddler Coppola and his 
childhood memories of the Sandman and Coppelius, which he uses to 
justify his panic reaction. Since Nathanael inadvertently addresses this 
letter to Clara (a first indication that he is obviously quite confused), he 
also gets a reply from her. She tries to calm him down by offering a 
rational explanation for his fears. In the third letter, again addressed to 
Lothar, Nathanael complains about Clara's reaction and tells of his first 
encounter with Olimpia. Then suddenly an author reports

Narrator who speaks directly to the reader and continues the story. The 
narrator not only describes what is happening, but also intervenes himself and 
comments ironically on the Olimpia episode, for example. After the 
presentation of Nathanael's madness and end, there is a brief outlook on 
Clara's future at the very end. Even in the primarily authorially narrated 
sections, some passages are obviously presented from Nathanael's point of 
view, for example when Coppelius suddenly appears "giant" on the market 
square. Hoffmann's vocabulary and the nested sentence structure seem rather 
unusual and not exactly easy to understand for today's reader.

The story The Sandman is characterized by a sophisticated play with 
different perspectives: In the letters, the characters themselves have their 
say, and the omniscient narrator's report is partially broken in terms of 
perspective. This blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination.

is mentally ill and only imagines the threat, or he is actually being

The motive of the eyes or of seeing in general corresponds to the 
question of the correct perspective in the story: the stolen eyes already 
appear in the story of the Sandman from Nathanael's childhood; 
Coppola trades in glasses and other optical devices; looking through 
the binoculars ignites Nathanael's passion for Olimpia and ultimately 
drives him insane.

Olimpia as narcissism. It is also striking that the adult Nathanael 
cannot distance himself from his childhood fears, although they were 
clearly caused by a misunderstanding. In addition, the text also 
contains an ironic, socially critical element: Olimpia's behavior in
