CHAPTER 1. MODERN ASSSESSMENT IN TEACHING ENGLISH

1.1.Brief introduction to modern assessment

In order for effective learning to take place, other than a well-designed instructional process, assessment procedures are just as effective if they are properly designed and appropriately used. Assessments can be used mainly for monitoring the learning process through formative assessments or measuring the end of instruction achievement through summative assessments. also added that validity and reliability are the two most important characteristics of a well-designed assessment plan.4



Validity refers to the appropriateness and meaningfulness of the assessment results. There are four basic approaches to validation, which includes:

  1. how closely related are the assessment tasks to the objective tasks (content-related),

  2. how accurate does the assessment predict present or future performance (criterion- related),

  3. the inference of certain psychological characteristics, e.g. computation skills from the assessment results (construct-related evidence) and

  4. the specific intended usage of the assessment results (consequences).

In comparison, reliability refers to the consistency of the assessment results. There are also four methods of estimating the reliability of the assessment results.

  • Firstly, the test and retest method provide a coefficient that reports the stability of the test scores over a given period of time.

  • Secondly, the equivalent forms method measures that consistency of the test scores using alternate or parallel forms that are being administered to the same group of students.

  • Thirdly, the test-retest method with equivalent forms is an interesting combination of the first and second method, which involved administering alternate or parallel forms of the test with timely intervention.

  • Lastly, the internal-consistency method measures the consistency of the test scores using different parts of the test.
