Remind students of the 
Determine Important Information 
strategy. Explain: Nonfiction texts focus 
on statements supported with facts. Some information will provide stronger support than other 
information. Some authors include information that cannot be verified. As a reader, it is up to 
you to determine which information in a passage can be trusted. Tell students they are going to 
read about an African king. Say: As you read, think about which facts best help you learn the 
author’s main ideas. Have students read the directions at the top of the page and the passage. When 
students have finished reading, direct them to complete the strategy and skill practice activities. 
Review the answers together.

both text and a graphic organizer to convey information about the same subject. Look for the 
most important information in both areas. This will help you get the most out of a passage. Have 
students read the passage and study the chart. Then direct students to complete the strategy and skill 
practice activities. Review the answers together.
