Good readers use what they already know 
and what they read to infer new information about a topic. In order to make inferences, think 
about what the author is not directly stating. 
Then remind students of the 
Make Connections 
strategy

Say:
 
You can learn a lot about an activity an author is describing by picturing yourself 
participating in the event. You are going to read about improv, which is a type of comedy 
routine. As you read, think about what it might be like to improvise or sit in an improv 
audience. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy 
practice activities. Review the answers together.

Review the 
Make Inferences 
skill with students. Say: 
Authors encourage readers to make 
inferences about a subject or an idea by leaving out direct statements. As you read, think about 
how you could restate something the author said so it would be more direct. Ask yourself: 
What is the author specifically trying to say? 
Then review the 
Organization
strategy. Say: 
Authors can organize their ideas by using cause and effect, compare and contrast, sequence, or 
main idea and details. Pay attention to how the author organized the information about H. G. 
Wells in this passage. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and 
strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Tell students they will practice both the 
Compare and Contrast
and 
Make Inferences
skills by 
reading about the world’s tallest man. Then remind students of the 
Make Connections 
strategy.
