To achieve the main 
purpose, an author will include specific details or use certain writing techniques. As you read
think about how each detail contributes to the main purpose.
Then remind students of the 
Determine Important Information
strategy (Week 5). Say: 
When you have finished reading the 
entire passage, pause to think about which information was the most important for conveying 
the author’s main points. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill 
and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Remind students of the 
Author’s Purpose
skill. Say: 
Look for clues that hint at the author’s 
purpose. Authors who are writing to entertain might use humor or exaggeration to make their 
stories more interesting. Authors writing to persuade will use language that encourages 
readers to feel the same way the author feels. Authors who are writing to inform will include 
facts. Good readers can identify an author’s purpose quickly by looking for these types of clues.
Then remind students of the 
Ask Questions
strategy (Week 6). Say: 
It can be helpful to ask 
questions about the purpose so that you look for clues to the author’s point of view as you read. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill practice activity. Review 
the answers together. Then have partners complete the strategy practice activity.

Review the 
Evaluate Evidence
skill with students. Say: 
You are going to read a letter written to a 
mayor by a concerned citizen. Study the claims the writer makes in the letter. Think about the
