The Stinkiest Fruit
The durian fruit is found in southeast Asia and is known there as the “king of fruits.” Many people
would disagree with this title, however, and call it instead the “stinkiest of fruits.” The durian tree can take
five to twenty years to come to maturity, and the fruit can grow to the size of a football. It is encased in a
hard, spiny shell; people are sometimes injured when the fruit ripens and falls from their trees. Inside the
shells are segments of creamy flesh that some say tastes buttery, honey-like, or like almond custard.
The downside of the durian is its intense odor. Compared to unwashed socks, turpentine, dead meat,
rotten fish, or fermented onions, the durian’s smell is certainly stinky. The odor given off by durians attracts
animals that eat it and then disperse its seeds, helping durian trees survive despite the deforestation that
threatens them. Even though the fruit is tasty, the smell of a durian is hard for humans to endure. The fruit
has been banned from subways and other public areas of Singapore.
To enjoy a durian’s creamy innards, a person must first be able to handle the horrific smell. Those who
enjoy the fruit often prepare it in different ways. In some places, it is boiled with coconut water or sugar,
made into a syrup to top ice cream, or cooked with onions and vinegar to make a relish. Most of those who
love durians, however, believe they are best simply eaten in sections, fresh from the refrigerator.
