Remind students of the
Visual Information
skill. Say: A chart is a good way to organize a large
amount of information into an easily readable format. Authors use charts to give readers
structured information about a subject. Tell students they are going to read a passage and study
a chart about third-party candidates from past presidential elections. Then remind students of the
Organization
strategy. Say: Think about why organizing the candidate information into a chart
is helpful to readers. When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and
strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Tell students they will practice both the
Nonfiction Text Features
and

Say: Pay attention to lists, headings, and individual text boxes. These will help you better

DAY 1
READ THE PASSAGE
Read slowly and pause after each paragraph.
Mobile Meals on the Wagon Trail
Settlers migrating westward on the old
pioneer trails in the 1800s had to prepare for a
trip that took six months or more. One of the
challenges was packing enough food for such
a long journey. Guidebooks counseled families
to pack several hundred pounds of food per
person, including the following:
• bacon
• dried beans • rice
• coffee
• dried fruit
• salt pork
• cornmeal • flour
• sugar
The settlers added to their diet by collecting herbs,
berries, nuts, roots, and other plant material during
their journey, along with wild game and fish. The women did the cooking, and
they could be very resourceful with limited ingredients. One popular dessert
treat along the trail was a rice pudding known as “spotted pup.”
