Cloud Gate
 has affected tourists and the art community.
Shiny Blob or Work of Genius?
Its official name is 
Cloud Gate,
but people in Chicago know it as “The Bean.” It is a giant stainless 
steel sculpture that stands in Chicago’s Millennium Park. The sculptor who made it, Anish Kapoor from 
Great Britain, called his creation 
Cloud Gate
because he wanted people to enter a different reality when 
they think about the way the sky is reflected in its shiny, curved surface. But when people see it, the first 
thing many notice is that it is shaped like a kidney bean. Since it was finished in 2004, it has become one 
of the most popular sights in Chicago.
“The Bean” is more than just a lofty piece of monumental public sculpture (art and architecture critics 
have generally agreed that it is an important work of art). It is a whole lot of fun, too. Standing before the 
gleaming 66-foot-long, 33-foot-high legume is like standing before the most elegant fun-house mirror you 
have ever seen. Visitors who gaze upon this giant sculpture can see themselves bent, stretched, twisted, 
multiplied, and pulled—right-side-up or upside-down—with the magnificent Chicago skyline for a 
background.
Whether you feel

is a thought-provoking work of art or “The Bean” is a wacky tourist 
attraction, one thing is certain: like Shakespeare’s rose that by any other name still smells as sweet, the 
shiny blob has taken its place in the hearts of Chicagoans as one more enduring and unique symbol of
