Grand Slam Tennis, Anyone?
In 1873, Major Walter Wingfield, a British army officer, invented a game called lawn tennis. This is the 
game from which modern outdoor tennis evolved. Croquet was very popular at the time, and the smooth 
croquet courts worked well for the game of lawn tennis. The first world amateur lawn tennis championships 
were held in 1877 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, England. The 
tournament committee created the measurements of the rectangular court and the set of rules that 
essentially govern the game we know today.
Three other major tennis tournaments started soon after. In the United States, the first U.S. National 
Championship took place in 1881. France’s International Championships began in 1891, and the 
Australasian Men’s Championships (later renamed Australian Championships) started in 1905. These four 
international tournaments make up the Grand Slam. Winning all four Grand Slam tournaments proves not 
only consistency but also adaptability because of the differences in the court surfaces. Wimbledon 
features grass courts, France uses clay courts, and the U.S. and Australian tournaments are played on 
hard courts. The court type affects the ball’s bounce and the game’s speed. Since most star players play 
best on a particular surface, winning on different surfaces can be challenging.
As of 1968, the tournaments were renamed Open tournaments because both professionals and 
amateurs were allowed to compete. Today, professional players compete for millions of dollars in prize 
money, and tennis is enjoyed by millions of tournament viewers across the globe.
