cur  on   m o re  th an   one  syllab le  o f  a  w o rd ,  the  b a sic   p rincip le  in  a 
stress  language  is  th a t  only  one  syllable  p e r  w o rd   w ill  receive 
p rim ary   stress.  T his  idea  is  som ew h at  vague  as  th ere  are  w ords 
w h ich   h av e  tw o  p rim ary   stresses.  W o rd  accent  is  culm inative  in 
n atu re  b u t  its  n u m b er  and  deg ree  depen d   on  the  structure  o f   a
