this  difference there m ay b e cases  o f syllabic interference.  T h e   syl­
lable  division  m ay  depend  on  the  free  and  check ed  character  o f 
E nglish  vow els.  A ll  the  long  m o nophthongs,  tw o  d iphthongoids 
and  diphthongs  o f E nglish  are  regarded  free,  as  they  occu r  both  in 
open  and  closed  syllables,  w hile  all  the  ch ecked  v ow els  o c c u r in  a 
closed  syllable.T he  free  vow els  m ay  be  separated  fro m   the  w ord- 
final  syllabic  sonorants,  w hen  the  latter fo rm  separate  syllable w ith 
the  preceding  consonants,  e.  g.
