The  vow el inventory and the distribution o f vowels  and  their 
description  varies  from  one  linguist  to  another.  W hile  there  are 
more  sim ilarities  in  the  description  o f  vow el  phonem es  in  RP. 
A lm ost  all  the  British  linguists  distinguish  tw enty-one  vowel 
phonem es  including  the  facultative  or  optional  vowel  /зэ/.  The 
most  original  vowel  table  o f  RP  and  GA   is  given  by  J.  W indsor 
Lewis  in  his  «А  Concise  Pronouncing  D ictionary  o f  B ritish  and 
Am erican  English»  (London,  O xford Univ.  Press,  1972)  (See Fig. 
1-4).

R ounded  vowels  are  given  in  О  ungrounded  in 
and  when 
the  first  or  the  second  elements  o f  diphthongs  are  rounded,  they 
are  indicated by /э и //и э /,  J.  W.  Lewis  uses  the  symbols  o f narrow 
form  o f  transcription:  The  diphthong  /з э /  is  omitted  in  the  RP 
vow el  table.  RP  /э/  does  not  appear  in  the  GA  table  because  it  is 
usually  substituted by  /а/  in  GA.  It would  also  have  been  possible 
to  om it  symbol  /л /  from   Fig.  2  because  in  the  case  of  m ost  GA 
speakers  it  scarcely  differs  from  /э / in  quality.  The RP diphthongs
