«Do you live in a burglar friendly house?»
Lesson plan

  1. - Good morning, dear children. I’m very glad to see you. Take your seats, please. So, let’s see who is with us today. Great! So, let’s begin.

2. Today we’re going to talk about soothing that is very important for all of us to know to feel safe. Will you, please, look at the board? Do you know these people in the pictures? (attachment 4)?
- They are burglars.
- What do they do? What for? Why do they do that?
- They break into houses to get money and different valuables. They don’t want to work.
- What is the reason for that kind of behavior?
- Lack of education, improper upbringing, disrespect for other people, bad habits.
- When you hear a word “burglar”, what comes to your mind?
- We are going to find it out. ( “Bingo” game (to elicit background knowledge, pair work). There’s a “Bingo” grid on every desk. (attachment 1). – First of all, let’s remember the rules of the game. Who can help me?
-The game resembles Russian lotto. There are 9 cells in the grid. Those who cover first any vertical, horizontal, diagonal line or all 4 corners are the winners. They should shout “Bingo” (Учитель все сопровождает рисунками на доске.)
- Now you have to fill in the cells of the “Bingo” grid. In pairs you have to write down the words that you associate with word “burglar”. One word for one cell of the grid. You have two minutes.
- Are you ready? Now I’m going to read you an article about burglars. When you hear a word written in your grid, cross it out. Don’t forget to shout “Bingo” when you’re ready. (attachment 5)

  1. The mail part of the lesson.

We’ve heard, that unfortunately police are not always able to help us. But we shouldn’t fold hands. What can we do to protect our homes from burglars? We are going to solve this problem now. We’ll work in groups. Those who are at the first and the third desks, will you, please, turn around to face your classmates that are behind you. I’m handing out sheets of paper with pictures of houses on them. (attachment 2). Some of them are burglars proof, some are burglars friendly. You have to state what is what and then explain your point of view. (To check the understanding I ask somebody to repeat the task.). You have 5 minutes for discussion.
-Well… Team #1, what do you think of the first house?
- It’s burglar friendly because there’s a ladder next to the tree, and an attic window is opened.
-Do you agree with team #1? Вы согласны с командой №1? (Yes. If no, then why?). The second house. Team #2 what do you think of it?
- It’s burglar proof, because the light is on in the living room and Tv is on as well.
- Does anybody have different point of view? Perfect. House number 3. Let’s ask third team.
- It’s burglar friendly. The mail box is full. That means that hosts have been absent for a while.
- Team #4, will you share your ideas about the 4th house?
- It doesn’t look protected, but the criminal won’t break in because it doesn’t look attractive.

- Now we’ll watch a short video about how to protect our homes. There you’ll see some more useful ideas. (просмотр видео – 2 мин)
-What advice have you heard?
- To set a burglar alarm. To lock up valuables in the safe. To invite experts to your house to check it.
- Great. What other pieces of advice do you remember from the lesson?
- (students give pieces of advice given above).
- Now I see, that you’re almost experts yourselves. That’s why your home task will be to make a booklet on how to protect the house from burglars. The booklet should be done on A4 format sheet of paper. The more creative, the better.
Today you’ve done a great job and I hope you’ve learnt some new and useful things. The lesson is over. Thank you very much and see you next time.
