Pari reflected quietly to herself how patronising Michael was to imagine that they, meaning not only Mehran and Simin, but – she imagined she meant her countrypeople – would be dominated by Facebook. She didn’t say anything be-cause it would be just too difficult to explain and she didn’t have time for it. What she found so annoying was that Michael would just think that he was in-viting some sort of critical discussion on the topic, and that that was all it was for him. For people like Mehran and Simin, who felt themselves so much on the Periphery when it came to Western technologies like Facebook, it was a permanent struggle against government restrictions. Yes, it was Western. That’s where it came from. But so did football and the telephone. But how many scientists, engineers, technical people, inventors and so on came from places like she did; and how many of them would be making these things in their own countries if they had the opportunity? When things like Facebook ar-rived on the scene her people took to them like fish to water, and knew exactly what to do. She looked at the carpet on the floor, which was produced by an Eastern country. No-one ever said to Westerners, ‘are you sure it’s safe to take on these Eastern ideas’. She also saw the surprise on Michael’s face when she mentioned the precise timing of the visit. Did he really think that they couldn’t organise things on time? They might not think it was such a high priority to think about absolutely everything in terms of time like these people did – always looking at their watches – but when it was something as important as the family of a potential husband coming, this really wasn’t a problem at all. Anyway, it was all a myth, this thing about time in the West. Especially the young people seemed far more civilised about it. They were all looking at phones instead of watches!
