To my mind, one of the most interesting traditions in my country is the one called Bayanihan. Even though I'm not particularly interested in all this stuff, this one seems to be really worth talking about.
'Bayanihan' symbolizes a spirit of communal unity and cooperation and literally means community, nation, town. There's an old tradition of neighbors helping a relocating family by getting enough volunteers to carry the whole house, and literally moving it to its new location. Just imagine, the whole house. They do this by placing long bamboo poles under the house. Thank God traditional Filipino houses are built on stilts. Then all of them lift the house and carry it using this bamboo frame. It takes a fairly large number of people, often 20 or more, working together to carry the entire house. All this is done in a happy and festive mood. At the end of the day, the moving family expresses their gratitude by hosting a small fiesta for everyone.
I've never taken part in it or seen it with my own eyes. Recently I've seen a video on YouTube, so I can imagine what it is like. In the video the men carrying the house were kind of singing, laughing and speaking loudly. They seemed to have a lot of fun.
I'm convinced that this ancient tradition is interesting because it reflects the communal feeling of unity and mutual help and provides a good example of collaboration of neighbours.
