''TELL TALE HEART'' short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

Theme: The symbols of ''Tell Tale Heart'' story.

Abstract:

'' A Tell Tale Heart'' is short story about a man who commits a murder to an old man. This paper about the symbols of this story and their meaning. In the introduction, gives short meaning of this story. In this story simbols are evil eye, lantern, bedroom, heart, police and others. In the literature review about researchers and about their work. In discussion and analysis parts are to describe the symbols and what they represent, also has some evidences from the story. And in conclusion part is we summarized all the point.

Introduction: ''The Tell Tale Heart '' is short story written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1984. This story of a nameless person. It tells about Old man was killed by a man. And this person lived with Old man. The story describes the man's personal feelings for old man. The Adgar Allan Poe shows many acts and situations for reveal that he was insane. Poe tries to expose someone who has personality disorder, that makes his hearing get sensitive.

Literature Review

Many people and scientists have been working on this story.

For exapmle,Silverman, Kenneth worked about Edgar A. Poe: Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance. Kenneth Silverman is a professor of English, a graduate advisor in American Civilization, co-director of The Biography Seminar at New York University. His work about many memorable short stories as well as poetry came from the skilled genius's pen.

And second researcher is Robinson, E. Arthur. He worked about "Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart"". '''Human beings experience life trusting that eyes are lenses to the outer world without comprehending the very fact that eyes mirror the interior more than the exterior part.''--from Robinson's work.

And the last one is D. Reynolds. His work name is What are the two main symbols in the story "The Tell-Tale Heart"? What does each one represent? What is one other symbol Poe might have chosen?. Is is about the symbols of the story and their explaination.

Discussion:

there are so many symbols in this story and each has its own meaning. These are the most basic symbioses are the Old's man 'Evil eye'' and heart beating.

Fisrt symbol is eye. We know that the beginning of the story narrator loved the Old man , unfortunately, for his eye's the narrator hate and decided to kill him. Then he think, afer of the old man die, hefeels happy. That's in this story it describes''

He had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually --I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever. Now this is the point.'' We should understand that the eye has many symbolic interetapretion of the old's man eye.

The First is the eye represents the essence of the old man.

Second is the eye hold mysterous power, according to the narrator and may symbolize the inability of the narrator to hide the secret sins

Third is the old's man eye is'' a pale blue eye, with a film over it'' indicating a lack of visual clarity and reliability.

Also, Heart is the main symbols of the story. Heart represents emotion and conscience. the man who heard the heartbeat thought the dead old man was coming but it would be his own heart.From this it can be seen that the heart expresses conscience and emotion.

Futhermore, we can feel that the heart and the name of the story are connected. in which the heart speaks its fears and the narrator becomes angry and then he is doing his foul work.

Another symbol is Lantern. The lantern in "The Tell Tale Heart" symbolizes the lack of insight on the part of the narrator, and acts as a support for his beliefs.a lantern is an object that shows light and through it we can see some realities. Sometimes a light shows us the bad side of things without showing us the original look. for example, it shows the "bad eyes" of the old man,but does not show the old man feeling. .In this story the lantern was an accomplice to the narrator and was with him in the murder.

Fourth symbol is old man's bedroom. Is is symbolize that burial place. Because we know that we are perhaps most vulnerable in bed, and we sleep well when we feel safe in ourbedroom. Poe turns the symbol of the bed on its head . The narrator uses the bed as the weapon tu snuff out of the old man. And since the bed is the murder weapon, that's why its burial place.

Analysis:

Another symbol is police. Police represents guilty conscience of the narrator. Did the narrator get nervous only when the police showed up.'' I felt myself pale and wished them gone''(para 10).

'' I made up mykind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever'' (para3).

It means that eye repserent the narrator insanity and obsession.It was that led him to kill.

''I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! ''

About this, we may know that narrator firstly loved the old man. He lived with them but one day he fears the old' man eye. And he say that it was the cause of the crime.

''Almighty God! --no, no! They heard! --they suspected! --they knew! --they were making a mockery of my horror!-this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! Anything was more tolerable than this derision! I could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die! and now --again! --hark! louder! louder! louder! louder!''(para 11). After doing the killing. the narrator's heart swells and remains insane. Hears the beating of the heart from everywhere because at that moment there is a knock on the door. he panics again. it is a heart beating but its narrator's heart.

' '. Meantime the hellish tattoo of the heart increased. It grew quicker and quicker, and louder and louder every instant. The old man's terror must have been extreme! It grew louder, I say, louder every moment! --do you mark me well I have told you that I am nervous: so I am''(para 4). This we see that the old's man heart is loudly and quickly beating. The poor old man feels the heat of death, and his heart beats with fear and can not do anything.

Conclusion:

About this story, we come some conclusions.

----Telling the Tale Tell is still relevant today. this story is about the murders committed because of madness and hatred. Talks about a person’s feelings. And the influences of the personal psychology.

----Adgar Allan Poe skillfully described each symbol. Because of this, we must not allow crime

----Edgar Allan Poe makes great use of techniques such as imagery and manipulating time to describe the themes throughout the novel, like insanity and fear.
