There are three main measures of central tendency: the mode, the median, and the mean. Each of these measures describes a different indication of the typical or central value in the distribution. The mean is computed by adding all of the numbers in the data together and dividing by the number elements contained in the data set. The median of a data set is dependent on whether the number of elements in the data set odd or even. The mode for a data set is the element that occurs the most often. It is not uncommon for a data set to have more than one mode. This happens when two or more elements occur with equal frequency in the data set.
To find the mode or modal value, it is best to put the numbers in order. Then count how many of each number. A number that appears most often is the mode.
The mean is the average we’re used to, where we add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers.
The median is the middle value in the list of numbers. To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order from smallest to largest, so you may have to rewrite your list before you can find the median.
