Task 5 Social roles in different cultures: Classroom behavior.
Work with a partner. Imagine that the situations below take place in the UK or the US. What would you do in each situation? In some situations, more than one answer may be possible.

  1. You are 20 minutes late for class. The teacher is explaining something to the class when you arrive. What would you do?

  1. Go in, walk up to the teacher and apologize.

  2. Wait outside the classroom until the class is over and then apologize to the teacher.

  3. Knock on the door and wait for the teacher to tell you it is OK to come in.

  4. Go in as quietly as you can and take a seat.

  1. The teacher gives the class some homework for the next day. You know that you won’t be able to finish it on time. What would you do?

  1. Explain the situation to the teacher and ask if you can hand in your work later.

  2. Not go to class the next day.

  3. Go to class the next day without the homework and say nothing.

  4. Do as much of the homework as you can and give it to the teacher the next day.

  1. You have got a doctor’s appointment and need to leave class early. What would you do?

  1. Not go to class.

  2. Get up and leave the classroom when it’s time to go to your appointment.

  3. Explain the situation to the teacher before class.

  4. When it is time to go to your appointment, get up and explain to the teacher why you have to leave.

  1. You have got a question about something the teacher has just said in class. What would you do?

  1. Look confused.

  2. Call out, “I have got a question”.

  3. Raise your hand and ask the teacher to explain.

  4. Wait and ask the teacher to explain after class.

  1. You are sitting in the classroom talking to a classmate, when the teacher comes in. What would you do?

  1. Stand up to show your respect for your teacher.

  2. Look up and greet the teacher.

  3. Look down to show your respect for the teacher.

  4. Look up and pay attention to the teacher.
