A circular relationship
The GEO-5 report has identified a daunting list of global environmental issues. For the purposes of understanding sustainable development, however, there are two key points to make about this list of issues. First, many - if not all - of these environmental issues are caused, in one way or another, by development. For this reason, conventional efforts to promote development have attracted severe criticism from environmentalists - and they have prompted some people to call for 'green' forms of development that are more ecologically-sensitive. Second, many - if not all - of these environmental issues represent, in turn, significant obstacles to further development. Depleted natural resources and degraded ecosystems mean that it is more difficult to provide even the basic goods and services that people need to support their livelihoods and well-being. Once again, the relationship between environment and development is brought to the fore: a relationship that is now seen to be circular. Thus development can cause environmental degradation; in turn, environmental degradation can undermine development.
In the 21st century, the issue of the ecological problems became the most acute. The
development of world technical progress, population growth, and irrational use of the Earth's
resources led to an ecological catastrophe, which requires an immediate solution from the
local level to the international one. The ecological situation concerns not only our country,
Russia, but the whole Planet. It depends not on the life of single city, but of the whole of
humanity as a whole. I decided to take this topic for my report, because I believe that people
pay little attention to the environment, neglecting all the resources that it gives. The main
problem of man is that he does not realize the scale and seriousness of this problem. And I,
as a lawyer and just a person deeply interested in solving this problem, will try to convey to
you the importance of the issue.
The term "ecology" originated in the framework of biology. Its author was professor of
Jena University E. Haeckel in 1866 [1]. Ecology originally considered as part of biology,
studying the interaction of living organisms, depending on the state of the environment. Later,
the notion "ecosystem" appeared in the West, and in the USSR - "biocenosis" and
2. Global issues require global solutions. These issues include hunger and climate change – the key problems with the world today addressed by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Implementing solutions at scale, however, can seem like a nearly insurmountable challenge. Open innovation and collaboration across borders are both key. When global leaders in the public and private sectors act more openly, they not only seize huge economic opportunities but can also help society at large.
