Conclusion
The aim of this course work is to describe the workings of the system of special verb forms used in English to locate situations in time. In this introductory chapter we lay the terminological and conceptual groundwork which is necessary before we embark on our grammatical description of the English tense system. Our concern is to provide precise definitions of the basic linguistic terms that will be used and to explain the conceptual apparatus that will be adopted both in this volume and in subsequent volumes dealing with the English verb phrase.
Analyzing the grammar of language is extremely complex and is something that is generally left to academic linguists. However, the variety of theoretical frameworks and the technical jargon used in English grammar has the ability the exclude the non-expert from understanding the grammar. Despite this, academic descriptions of English grammar are used in language classroom sand texts, which can make the difficult ask of learning a language even more difficult. It may surprise the reader to learn at this point that I am actually against the use of grammar as a method of learning and teaching second languages. However, every languages tool that I have worked at believes that it is important and so I teach it. Therefore, the reason for doing this project is the belief that, if we have to teach grammar to ESL students, then let’s make what is extremely complex as simple and user-friendly as possible.
