Counterclockwise Perimeter Circuit of Manhattan Island – tour cue

go do at

0.0 L south, on Hudson River Bike Path at Christopher Street

You will pass between the tan brick ventilating shafts of the Holland Tunnel south of Houston/ north of Canal with the Freedom Tower straight ahead
Just beyond Harrison St, first building on your right is Stuyvesant High School. A detour following the water's edge will take you along the Hudson to pick up the directions below at the North Cove. If crowded, walk bike.
1.3 R  current detour on Vesey St. Then take a left at first intersection, North End Ave, go past the guardhouse and emerge on the World Financial Center Plaza at the North Cove. Following the bicycle detour signs, bear left around the cove and take the first left at end of cove which will lead you to the next street, where you will take a right; South End Ave at Liberty St. Go one block and take a left onto Albany St, go one block on Albany and take a right onto the bike path going south. (look back foanother great view of the Freedom Tower) I’m guessing this detour relates to work at Ground Zero, across West Street.

0.4  L   Battery Place, follow it to the light where Broadway starts on the left, keeping the park on your right. Or, better still, walk your bike straight ahead thru the park to the water and continue going to the left along the waterfront of The Battery. When you can go no further, at The Battery Gardens restaurant, the path will take you out to State Street just before the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. [Why not take your bike on a round trip on the SI Ferry? It's free!]

0.1   R    State Street, Battery Park is still on your right

0.2    S       crossing the access to the park and the Staten Island

Ferry Terminal. A bike path will appear, paralleling State Street, take it as it veers to the right at Whitehall Street. Follow it around as it drops you in front of the Governor’s Island Ferry Terminal. Keep going past the terminal and head north along the East River. It will continue north under the elevated FDR Drive, joining pedestrian traffic at the South Street Seaport, then continue past the old Fulton Street Fish Market where the path will cut to the right, go straight under the eaves of the old fish market shortly, then go back left and you will be back again under the FDR Drive. Note the building across South Street on the south side of Fulton Street. The Heartland Brewery is the current occupant. This was the old hotel in Joseph Mitchell’s non-fiction short, “Up in the Old Hotel,” perhaps the best story of New York City ever penned.

You will pass under both the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. At Rutgers St the bike path will cross under the FDR Drive away from the water, to the land side of the drive, be mindful of the curb!

2.0   BR    At Montgomery St follow path to the right as it wends on an unimproved section of the East River Bikeway to East River Park. Take the first right, at the sign East River Park. The esplanade starts here. Across the river is the Brooklyn Navy Yard, its boatyard lying idle. As you turn left around Coorlear's Hook, the Williamsbug Bridge will appear. Further on, between the ball fields is the red surface 400 meter track I practice on.

1.2     squeeze into the narrow common path as a Con Ed Steam plant on your right,. Luckily it is for only one block. Be careful!

0.8        22nd Street thru Waterside Plaza, the path here is like the Cheshire Cat, appearing and disappearing, a grin, then nothing. Be mindful of speed bumps! Another mess. I can’t quite figure out what they want us to do here. Stay on the road or follow the path in front of the Water Club, behind  its parking lot, and you’ll be back under the FDR Drive. At 34th St you have the option of getting to the left and taking 35th St to 1st Ave or keeping right and:

0.5   L     at 37th Street there is a traffic light where you can cross in front of cars entering the FDR going northbound. As you go under the FDR Drive be very careful of cars crossing directly in front of you. Traffic is unexpected and quite aggressive. However, there is actually a traffic light but you need to wait for green to pass in front of these cars safely. Follow this one short block to 1st Avenue where you take a right.

0.1   R     1st Avenue. Sorry, but you’ll have to keep way to the right or ride on the sidewalk, my advice it till at least 42nd St. The situation is red alert until you get to 60th Street. You can’t miss the United Nations complex on the right.

1.1   R    60th Street, just after passing under the 59th Street Bridge.

0.1    X       York Ave then climb grade ahead bearing to the left, go down the grade and bear right onto the river esplanade going north.

1.1           Roll your bike in the gutter on the right as you walk up the 3 flights of steps. Follow the path back north on the elevated esplanade, slowly cycling thru crowded Carl Schurz Park. Note the navigational light at the northern end of Roosevelt Island, the Triboro and Helll Gate bridges, as well as a glimpse of Gracie Mansion (on your left.) The path will descend to the left and follow the FDR Drive north. You will pass the 103rd Street pedestrian bridge to Randalls Island, an optional side trip. If so, take the bike path, left off the bridge, a left over the small bridges on the wetland, bear left at the parking lot and follow the signs to the bridge back to Manhattan. You will need to either go back down to 119th St, crossing town or cross town where you are to St Nicholas Avenue where you are.

2.2    L    120 St FDR Drive overpass, no signage from the south but you will see the street sign across the highway if you are paying attention. If you go by it, there is a sign seen looking south on the overpass.  Follow the ramp up over the FDR Drive pedestrian overpass. Go west on 120th Street one block, left, south, one block, then make the right on 119th St.

Eastern Harlem is barely above water level. You will need to go further to the west than you would expect to pass by roads that will not take you north:

0.1    R     1119th Street.

1.3    R      St Nicolas Avenue!

1.5    S/BR at 148th St onto St Nicolas Place. Careful, it is easy to get confused. Do not bear to the right onto Edgecombe Ave at 135 th St!

[If you look to your right on 125th St you can catch a glimpse of the Apollo Theater]

0.3     X       155th Street. Careful, lots of traffic in all directions! You will now follow the Harlem River Drive access road, keeping it on the left as you descend the sidewalk/bike path. [Catch a glimpse of Yankee Stadium in The Bronx to the right at the top of your descent]

0.3     L      Crossing the Harlem River Drive access road. You will have a brief opportunity to go thru the concrete barrier; be mindful. Follow it down to the esplanade by the river and continue north. You will go beneath the High Bridge, I-95 and the 181st Bridge, emerging on a park below Dyckman Street. An interesting short side trip is the quiet park at Swindler Cove, just beyond the newly renovated Peter Sharp boathouse.

1.8     R      onto 10th Avenue at Dyckman Street, following it to 218th Street. At 206th St the #1 train will run over your head. Welcome to the city!

1.0     L     218th Street, under the elevated #1 Train. Colombia's Baker Field/ stadium/playing fields are on your right overlooking the Harlem Ship Canal.

0.3     S    Enter Inwood Park, follow the path straight ahead, the boathouses on your right, cross the first tiny bridge then take a left over the second tiny pedestrian bridge just before the Evan Frankel Boat House. Continue on the path keeping the water on your right. At the path intersection with the Inwood Hill Park Forest Restoration sign, go either to the right or left, both ending at the far end of the field. Stay right, The path will ascend as it climbs to the west at the northernmost tip of Manhattan, crossing under the Henry Hudson Bridge. At the intersection before the climb note the plaque commemorating Shorakkopoch, the aboriginal settlement and the Great Sachem Tree, site of where Pieter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island in 1626 for the Dutch West India Company. Climb up and under the Henry Hudson Bridge and take in views of Spuyten Duyvil and the Palisades. Notice the huge trees and pristine forest. Views of the Hudson will open up. Cycling this section will give substance to the translation of Manhattan as “island of many hills.” The trail will end on a railroad overpass to the right. Walk the steps up and down, then continue south, left, on the path with a fence bordering the railroad tracks on your left, and the ball fields of Dyckman Field on your right. As you exit the park, go left on Dyckman Street, pass under the West Side Highway and take the next right up steep Staff Street. It is one way, the wrong way so you can walk your bike if you please. It isn’t a very busy street so your biggest concern is being in your small chain ring and largest cog. Staff Street is all of one short block. You will mind the incoming traffic pasing in front of you as they enter onto the northbound West Side Highway. Cross over to the sidewalk, proceeding on it under the West Side Highway. Ascend the stairs on the right immediately after the underpass. Carry or roll your bike on the verge as you ascend. Reputedly, these stairs are slated to be replaced with a bike ramp. I hope to be able to drink to its completion.

0.0     Continue south on the bike path along the West Side Highway. You will be climbing here and crest with a columned portico structure on the right overlooking the Hudson and Ross Dock off “River Road” in NJ. Continuing on, atop the next crest is the 182nd Street West Side Highway pedestrian/bike overpass. This is your access for a potential side trip to Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters. Pay close attention because in:

1.3     The path will descend very steeply and turn 90 degrees to the right. Careful, this is the steepest section of this route! Follow it under the overpass of the southbound West Side Highway and over the railroad overpass, currently covered with wooden boards studded with nails, “temporary” for as long as I can remember. Just wend your way thru and prepare for the final descent under George Washington Bridge to the water level Hudson River Bike path. Note the tiny park with the “Little Red Lighthouse Under the Great Grey Bridge” on your right. After the tennis courts on your left the path will jog left and right, following the shoreline south. It will crest as it enters a paved park area used for volleyball. Cut diagonally to the right, to pick up the main path going south. It will thread thru a northern extension of Riverside Park just north of Riverbank Park. On a weekend day with good weather this will teem with people. Be mindful of small children. As the path approaches Riverbank Park proper it will turn to the left, then continue south between a playing field and the railroad tracks on your left. Soon you will be under the West Side Highway overpass and emerge on 135th Street. Go right and a quick left to pick up the path again by the water. The new Harlem Piers Park on your right has water fountains. As you continue south the path will take its final rise below its intersection with St Clair Place. It might ascend, then descend all of 40 feet. Be mindful of buckling of the paved surface later in the next mile. The short stretch beyond where the path divides into a walking path on the right and the bike path on the left has the most surface buckling. Around the equivalent of 97th Street there is another water fountain on your left before the tennis courts. Shortly, the path becomes a bike/pedestrian causeway over the Hudson. Beyond this is the 79th Street Boat Basin. Restrooms and another fountain are a bit further south. Just past what would be the 72nd Street exit you will be forced to turn left as the path rises up a few feet, with a soccer field on the right. The path then turns right under the West Side Highway Miller Overpass and you are heading south again. Mind the pedestrian crossing at the outdoor café, yielding to walkers. In about a half mile you will veer right from under the Miller Overpass, then left again going south by a refuse transfer station. After you pass the park on your right you will cut left around the ocean liner berths, Pier 94 thru the Intrepid. These were blasted out of bedrock just at the tail end of transatlantic ship travel to accommodate the behemoths of the day. Exercise a bit more caution from here on to the end as path usage tends to increase along this stretch in good weather, and motor traffic crosses at a number of places. The Circle Line, the car tow pound, Chelsea Piers and the Highline a block or 2 away on your left and soon enough you will be back at Christopher Street.
