SITUATIONAL APPROACHES TO LEADERSHIP
Situational models assume that appropriate leader behavior varies from one situation to
another. For instance, the “Tough Times, Tough Choices” feature illustrates how economic
factors might influence leader behavior. The goal of a situational theory, then, is to identify
key situational factors and to specify how they interact to determine appropriate leader behav-
ior. In the following sections, we describe four of the most important and widely accepted
situational theories of leadership: the least-preferred coworker (LPC) theory, the path-goal
theory, Vroom’s decision tree approach, and the leader–member exchange (LMX) approach.
