Annual Performance Report (APR)
Carl Junction students improved their APR score this year to 95%, up from 94.3% last year. The APR is the tool DESE will use to accredit school districts, beginning in July, 2015. The APR evaluates five specific areas/Standards: Standard 1, Academic Achievement, Standard 2, Subgroup Achievement, Standard 3, College and Career Ready, Standard 4, Attendance, and Standard 5, Graduation Rate. Districts earn points in each category and the number of points earned is presented as a percentage. The district increased the points earned in Academic Achievement (Standard 1) and College and Career Ready (Standard 3) while there was a decrease in points earned in Subgroup Achievement (Standard 2.) The charts below show district data, disaggregated data, building data and comparison data. Overall, district performance is high! Areas for focus are our math achievement overall and FRL student achievement in ELA and Math.
The chart below shows the 95% average score earned along with the breakdown of our scores for each of the five standards evaluated for the APR. Notable in this chart is that CJ earned 100% of the possible points in all but two areas. The two Standards below 100% are specifically focused on the district MAP and EOC results. Academic Achievement, Standard 1, displays results for all students testing. The percentage earned in 2014 improved from the previous year. Subgroup Achievement, Standard 2, displays results for students from subgroup populations. The subgroup percentage earned in 2014 declined from the previous year. You will note that if Standard 2 did not decline, our overall APR percentage would have been even higher.

The charts below breakdown each of the five categories listed on the summary APR. Notable on these charts is the amount of points earned through MA compared to ELA, SC and SS. The Math area is the reason Standard 1 was not 100%. Both the science and social studies scores met all possible points from status alone. In fact, Social Studies results for our students ranked in the top 10% of the state, again this year, for all students and for the Free & Reduced Lunch students. ELA and Math results were not high enough to earn all possible points outright, but ELA earned additional points through progress and growth. Math did not earn progress or growth points.

Subgroup achievement is an area of concern. The subgroup population is comprised of Black, Hispanic, ELL, Free and Reduced Lunch and IEP students. Results from all students identified in any one of the areas are evaluated to determine Standard 2 scores. Each student is counted only once in the calculation. Standard 2 results declined from 85.7% in 2013 to 78.6% in 2014. Science and Social Studies results remained consistent at 100%, which is great! ELA results remained at 75% but math results declined to 50% from 75% the previous year. ELA maintained its 75% by earning points through progress but Math did not earn progress points. During the 2013-2014 school year, there were approximately 1,056 students identified in Standard 2 for the ELA and Math assessments. Of these students, 4% were black students, 8% were Hispanic students, less than 1% were ELL students, 72% were FRL students, and 16% were IEP students. It is apparent that the bulk of student scores were those of our FRL population with IEP as the next highest area. A focus is being placed on helping our Free & Reduced Lunch and IEP students improve achievement.
The chart below shows how CJ APR scores compared to the school board comparison districts. Carl Junction ranked 5th for the second year in a row. If our Standard 2 results had at least remained the same from 2013, we would have earned a higher percentage! We will definitely focus on improving those subgroup scores next year!
2014 ACT Results
The composite ACT for Carl Junction this year was 22.4 and was the highest it has been since 2003! In addition, the composite and all tested areas were above both the state and national averages. All tested areas showed improvement with the most improvement in Science. We are very excited about this accomplishment! Carl Junction continues to assess a large majority of its graduates. Eighty percent of the graduating class of 2014 took the ACT. This is the highest percent of CJ graduates to ever take the assessment. With the addition of the ACT assessment required for all juniors during the 2014-2015 school year, many districts are concerned about their ACT scores. Because CJ has always tested a large majority of students each year, this new requirement should not have detrimental effects on our scores.

D=District S=State N=National
When comparing Carl Junction composite ACT scores to the district comparison schools, Carl Junction ranked 6th behind Nixa, Ozark, Marshfield, Bolivar, and Willard. As you can see from the chart below, though, Carl Junction tested more students than any other comparable district. The district with the next most tested students was Webb City. Their composite score, however, was well below the CJ score, at 20.6. Nixa, who had the highest composite score, only tested 63% of their students while Bolivar, with a composite score of 22.6 (.2 higher than CJ) tested only 59.3% of its students. This speaks well for CJ because generally, the more students tested on any assessment, the lower the score. As I said earlier, we need to continually improve our ACT scores but because we have tested so many of our students consistently, I am encouraged that we can perform at a high level on the state-mandated 11th Grade ACT test during the 2014-2015 school.
