6. Conclusions 
The direction of future methods and tec hnologies in 
cultivation will, as in the past, largely be decided by 
economics and politics. Despite increasing population 
pressure, the steady increase in production from 
emerging agricultural technologies will, together with 
pressures from Agenda 2000, maintain crop prices at a 
lower level than in the past. This coupled with an 
increasing cost of labour will require a significant 
reduction in input costs. Politics are likely to demand 
that farmers address the environmental

issues of energy use, pollution control and 
sustainability created by population pressure. 
These demands of low input and sustainable 
systems are not considered to be in conflict, 
rather the reverse. 
The key to r educing cultivation input costs is 
considered to be an understanding of soil compaction 
and its negative effects on e nergy and water use and 
crop yield. Addressing environmental issues also 
revolves around controlling compaction, which 
exacerbates organic matter loss, promotes erosion 
and adds to water and air-borne pollutants from the 
soil. Controlled traffic systems based on gantry 
tractors are seen as the most cost effective and 
practical way of addressing both the low input and 
environmental issues associated with crop 
production. 
Improving cultivation technology where few major 
advances in design can be envisaged, is considered to 
revolve around gaining a greater understanding of 
soil technology and crop dynamics. This will require 
close i nvolvement with research and research groups 
to devise effective and cost efficient components and 
systems which minimise waste. The development of 
decision support systems designed for farmers and 
governments will be useful tools to address these 
demands. The systems hould allow a reduction in i 
nput costs while minimising risk to the farmer, and at 
the same time embrace the environmental issues 
likely to be promoted through national subsidies.
