Human Resources Management and Work Sciences

The programme provides a firm foundation in the field of human resource management and work sciences for dealing with modern issues such as personnel training, work environment, work organisation, information and communication.

The study programme is constructed on three levels of complexity. The first two years are devoted to an overall perspective on human resources management and work sciences. Studies at this level include courses in psychology, sociology, education, labour law, business economics, research methods, projects, organization and work sciences. These basic courses are designed to give a general orientation and to promote critical thinking.

The third year addresses human resources management and work sciences on an advanced level. Students choose one of three specializations - education, psychology or sociology - and present a bachelor's thesis. During the fourth and final year, the students pursue elective courses in human resources management and work sciences and present a master's thesis in the chosen area of specialisation.

Study Programme Syllabus

Aim


Within the study programme students will acquire such general and fundamental knowledge and skills that are required for independent, critical and developing work in the human resource- and work science sector, which, among other things, concern issues in the human resource-, training-, work environment- and work organization areas. Studies in the programme are preparatory for a career in research in one of the subjects education, psychology and sociology, as well as in the Department for Tema.

The general aim of the education is the students’ development of the ability to work both independently and in cooperation with others, to present their knowledge in the human resource- and work science area both orally and in writing, and to apply the knowledge they have acquired. International aspects in this area are especially emphasized. The aim is also that the students will develop their ability to identify, structure and analyze problems from behavioural science perspectives, to understand fundamental connections and to shift between different perspectives on problems in the area of human resource- and work science. The education will be characterized by a balanced and critical scrutiny of different parties’ differing targets and interests.




The disposition of the programme: Core programme and advancements


The programme comprises 120 or 160 credit points and consists of a core programme of 80 credit points, an advancement 1 of 40 credit points (for a bachelor’s degree) and an advancement 2 of 40 credit points (for a master’s degree).

Core programme, 80 credit points


The core programme aims at the students’ acquisition of knowledge that makes possible a holistic view of the human resource- and work science area. The prerequisite for this is that the students acquire fundamental knowledge within the different subjects of education, psychology, sociology, economics and labour law. These subjects are included in different course units of the core programme, oriented towards the human resource- and work science area. Furthermore, the core programme will provide the students with opportunities to apply this theoretical knowledge in different activities in the human resource and work science area,

Advancement 1, 40 credit points


Advancement 1 aims at the students’ acquisition of knowledge both in the area of human resource- and work science, as well as in the subjects of education, psychology and sociology. In advancement 1 the students choose an advancement orientation of 20 credit points, C-level, in one of the subjects of education, psychology or sociology. This advancement contains an essay where the students are given opportunities to work actively with central problems and questions in the area of human resource and work science. This advancement leads to a bachelor’s degree.

Advancement 2, 40 credit points


The programme also has a second advancement, which aims at the students’ acquisition of knowledge both in the area of human resource- and work science, as well as in the subjects of education, psychology and sociology.

The advancement comprises 20 credit points of optional courses in the human resource- and work science field of activity. These courses are chosen in agreement with the director of studies for the programme. Furthermore, the advancement encompasses 20 credit points oriented towards one of the subjects of education, psychology or sociology. At the D-level, this advancement contains a thesis where the students are given opportunities to work actively with central problems and questions in the area of human resource and work science. This advancement leads to a master’s degree.

Eligibility


In addition to basic qualifications, the standard qualification D.3 is required. Exemption from the requirement of one year’s work experience.

Minimum Requirements


Admission to year 3 requires the students to have passed courses comprising at least 70 credit points, which have to include the following courses:

Psychology, 10 credit points


Sociology, 10 credit points
Education, 10 credit points
Research Methodology,
10 credit points
Project, 5 credit points

Permission to commence work on the master thesis in year 4 requires a succesful presentation and defence of the bachelor thesis, which is included in advancement 1.


Teaching


The teaching normally consists of lectures, group work, laborations and field trips. The forms of teaching are specified in more detail in the syllabuses for each respective course. Students are expected to be able to work with literature in English.

Examinations


Examinations can take place in the form of tests on a whole course or part of a course. Examinations are normally in written form and are arranged in close conjunction with each respective course. Oral examinations in the form of continuous assessment or individual tests may also occur. The tests can be completely or partly replaced by examinations that are based on practice exercises, which are carried out individually or in groups.

Students who have been failed at the ordinary examination are normally given two extra opportunities.

Students who have passed an examination are not allowed to take it again in order to achieve a higher grade.

Students who have been failed three times for a course or a part of a course have the right to request a new examiner at a new examination.

The syllabuses specify the exact requirements for each course.

Accreditation of Swedish and foreign education


Hearings of whether earlier education or activities can be accepted for accreditation are conducted by the undergraduate education board or by a teacher appointed by the undergraduate education board.

Diploma certificates


Students who have achieved 120 credit points within the programme (terms 1-6) meet the requirements for a bachelor’s degree with a major in either education, sociology or psychology.

Students who have achieved 160 credit points within the programme (terms 1-8) meet the requirements for a master’s degree with a major in either education, sociology or psychology.

The diploma certificate will specify that the studies have been completed in the education programme for human resource and work science. The certificate will specify which courses and other elements of the education that the students have completed.

Students who have completed the programme can upon request receive a diploma certificate in English for Bachelor/Master of Social Science.



Diploma certificates are issued by the faculty board. Requests for certificates have to be made on a special form, which is available at the Department. The form has to be handed in to StudentCentrum.
