  1. Narrowband IoT characteristics

Narrowband IoT, also known as LTE Cat NB1, supports the latest 3GPP security. With the help of a physical SIM card connected to the device (UICC), they provide at the highest level authentication as well as data encryption and signalling protection. NB-IoT is cost- effective, supports lower power consumption for low-cost devices, and provides a wide range of coverage. This Low Power Wide Area Networks technology makes economies of scale an important theory for the IoT industry, connects virtually anywhere and works with already established cellular networks (Routray & Hussein, 2019). This technology is used to deploy a very high volume of low complexity, connected devices intended to transmit small data packages now and then. It affects smart cities, smart buildings and consumers. By comparing NB-IoT with technologies in the unlicensed spectrum, NB-IoT is able to significantly reduce the common interference problem. Thus, operators can guarantee which services will operate on given frequencies and bands, and in combination with prioritising data guarantee high quality of service (QoS). In addition, NB-IoT allows a very large number of network objects per radio cell, about 50,000 devices (Narrow Band IoT, 2016). NB-IoT is also doing well when it comes to downlink. Of course, this variant of the LPWA network can be used to transfer and download data. Given the large volume of production of standardised NB-IoT modules, predictable in the medium term, low unit costs can also be achieved. All these elements make NB-IoT technology extremely
attractive in the context of its use in urban space (Brdulak, 2020).

To properly track a city many aspects are required. One of them is cost-efficiency. NB- IoT and LTE make it possible to control street lighting, free parking spaces or environ- mental conditions (Zhai, 2017). The analysis carried out in this report concerns examples of the use of NB-IoT technology in the area of functioning of an intelligent city related to the environment.
