is arranged for cross-flow or counterflow. Efficiencies as high as 80
percent can be obtained with high velocities and the extended surface
which results in high pressure drops. The most popular construction
material is aluminum, but it can be any sheet material. The plates
are formed from aluminum-alloy sheets with a surface coating of a
lower-melting-point alloy. The plates are assembled in a jig and are
dipped in a molten salt bath maintained at a temperature such that
the surface alloy melts while the base alloy remains unaffected. The
resulting structure is monolithic and easy to use. These exchangers
are relatively more expensive than those described earlier. They are
used extensively in aircraft because of light weight and suitability over
a wide range of temperatures. As with rotary wheel and heat-pipe
energy recovery devices, the supply and exhaust airstreams must be
contiguous.
