Apollo said Monday that its
board had voted to abandon
the firm’s dual-class share
structure and adopt a “one-
share, one-vote” regime—a
move it had said it was consid-
ering and that it expects will
pave the way for its inclusion
in the S&P 500 index. The in-
vestment firm has outlined a
number of other changes lately,
including the appointment of
more independent directors.
Apollo’s successful foray
into insurance has prompted
nearly every other publicly
traded firm that has tradition-
ally focused on private equity
to try to replicate it in some
fashion. In July, KKR & Co.
made public a deal to buy in-
surer Global Atlantic Financial
Group Ltd., sharply boosting
its assets under management.
For private-equity firms
looking to bulk up, such assets
are particularly attractive be-
cause insurance companies
like Athene typically seek far
more modest returns than
buyout investors, who have
gotten accustomed to double-
digit annual gains, opening up
a wider array of options for
deploying the cash.

To address the shortcom-
ings, the task force recom-
mends adding 854 new offi-
cers
with
a
variety
of
specialties including intelli-
gence analysts. It also urged a
dedicated
“quick
reaction
force” to respond to crises
that would draw from federal
law enforcement agencies or
the National Guard.
While the task force was
billed as independent, its rec-
ommendations are likely to
add to debate over how to
handle security following the
assault, which left five people
dead, including a police offi-
cer, and more than 100 offi-
cers injured.
Security at the Capitol has
remained high since the at-
tack, which came as Congress
was certifying President Bi-
den’s election victory, with law
enforcement warning that
threats are likely to continue.
Just under 5,200 National
Guard troops remained on
duty as of Monday, augment-
ing Capitol Police, according
to defense officials.
