insurers have been unloading
their annuity businesses at
cut-rate prices because ul-
tralow interest rates in the
U.S. since the global financial
crisis have made it tougher to
make money.
Athene has been in the van-
guard in picking up the scraps.
Working with Apollo as its as-
set manager, the concept was
that it could earn more invest-
ing customers’ money than
traditional insurers could,
thanks to the greater access it
enjoys to higher-yielding so-
called alternative investments.
