The main difference between these two styles of writing is a synthesis essay has time and topic restriction whereas research papers DO NOT. In other words, this type of essay is written with certain time frame

The process has four major components:

Synthesis:

  Puts parts together to form a whole, with emphasis on creating a new meaning or structure

  Combines information together in a different way by putting elements together in a new pattern or proposing alternative solutions

Common verbs associated with synthesis include:

categorise, combine, compile, compose, create, devise, design, explain, explore, formulate, generates, integrate, justify, modify, organise, plan, rearrange, reconstruct, relate, reorganise, revise, rewrite, summarise, sythesise, tell, write.

To make a synthesis you need to find suitable sources, and then to select the relevant parts in those sources. You will then use your paraphrase and summary skills to write the information in your own words. The information from all the sources has to fit together into one continuous text. Please remember, though, that when you synthesis work from different people, you must acknowledge it.
