I have supervised 12 doctoral candidates to completion of the Ph.D. degree (Marshall, Moran, Dodgson, Sun, Song, Huang, Gray, Bailey, Alamuti, Thomas, Mackintosh, Patterson). All of these were doctorates awarded by Newcastle University, UK, with the exception of Patterson (Stirling, UK). I have supervised doctoral candidates continuously throughout my career since the early 1990s. A number of my former doctoral students are now professional academics, including Don Marshall (Barbados), Kevin Gray (UK), Masoud Mohammadi Alamuti (Iran) and Mark Bailey (China). I am currently supervising seven doctoral candidates in Development Studies at the University of Helsinki.

I was an invited participant and speaker at the UNESCO Social Science Division and Ministry of Education of Mexico international conference on Rethinking development: Ethics and Social Inclusion, Mexico City, August 2011, and have lectured in the Critical Development Studies summer school at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico (two rounds). I organized and chaired the first international conference seminar of the Research Network on Global Governance and the Emerging Global South 8SouthGovnet), at Newcastle University, September 2011. I have most recently been invited as a member of a new international network and research group on Global Governance in the post 2015 World, which convened at City University New York, at the Ralph Bunche Institute, March, 2016 and is currently planning future research collaboration.

Scientific and Societal Impact of own research

I have in total some 80 publications. My work has been published in several languages, including Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, French, Dutch, Russian, and Spanish. I have been interviewed extensively in Russian media since 2011 (file-rf-ru) (www.iqso.ru) including television programmes. I was featured in a full page interview in the Wen Hui Daily, published in Shanghai, China, 23 December, 2013, discussing world system dynamics, globalization and the global financial and economic crisis. I have also been interviewed by the Polish journal Krytyka Polityczna on the global financial crisis (October 2011) and by the Iranian international news service (7 November 2011) on the European financial crisis.
