 is short for 
Disk Operating System
, but we're not referencing that operating 
system here in this chapter; we're referencing the partitioning 
structure that IBM came up with decades ago. For example, while 
using 
fdisk
, it will refer to the MBR partition structure as DOS. 
In this chapter, we'll use MBR to refer to the older style whenever 
possible to avoid confusion.

On the other hand, GPT doesn't have a 2 TB restriction, so if you have a very large 
disk, the decision between MBR and GPT has pretty much been made for you. In 
addition, GPT doesn't have a restriction of up to four primary partitions, as 
fdisk
 
with a GPT partition table will allow you to create up to 128 of them. It's certainly no 
wonder GPT is fast becoming the new standard! It's only a matter of time before GPT 
becomes the default, so unless you have a good reason not to, I recommend using it 
if you have a choice.
