Next, the device name can be found with the 
fdisk -l
 command. The 
fdisk
 
command is normally used for creating and deleting partitions, but it will also allow 
us to determine which device name our new disk received. Using the 
fdisk -l
 
command will give you the info, but you'll need to run it as 
root
 or with 
sudo
:
sudo fdisk -l
Executing this command produces the following output:

I always recommend running 
fdisk -l
 
before and after 
attaching a new device. That 
way, it will be more obvious which device name represents the new device.
Another trick is to use the following command, with which the output will update 
automatically as you add the disk:
dmesg --follow
Just start the command, attach the disk, and watch the output. When done, press 
Ctrl
 
+ 
c
 on your keyboard to return back to the prompt.
You can also find the device name of your new disk with the 
lsblk
 command. One 
benefit of 
lsblk
 is that you don't need 
root
 privileges and the information it returns 
is simplified:
